Empetus contains Ritonavir, a powerful protease inhibitor (PI) used in the treatment of HIV-1 infection. Ritonavir was initially developed as a standalone antiretroviral drug but is now primarily used as a pharmacokinetic enhancer (booster) to increase the effectiveness of other HIV medications, especially other protease inhibitors.
It works by inhibiting the cytochrome P450 3A (CYP3A) enzyme, which slows down the metabolism of co-administered drugs, thereby increasing their blood levels and therapeutic effect. When used as part of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), Empetus helps achieve better viral suppression and prolonged action of the primary drugs.
