Abacavir 300 mg, an antiretroviral medication classified as a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI). It is used as part of combination therapy for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. Abacavir works by blocking the reverse transcriptase enzyme, which HIV needs to replicate. By interrupting this process, helps reduce HIV viral load and increase CD4 cell counts, thereby strengthening the immune system.
Before beginning treatment with A-Bec, patients should be tested for the HLA-B*5701 allele, as its presence increases the risk of a potentially serious hypersensitivity reaction to Abacavir.
