nizonide 500 uk (Nitazoxanide)

Nizonide 500 uk contains Nitazoxanide, a broad-spectrum antiprotozoal and antiviral medication primarily used for the treatment of diarrhoea caused by protozoal infections, especially Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia. It is also used as part of treatment regimens for worm infections and some viral gastroenteritis.

Nitazoxanide works by interfering with the pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase (PFOR) enzyme-dependent electron transfer, essential for the anaerobic energy metabolism of parasites. It effectively reduces the duration and severity of diarrhoea and helps clear the parasitic infection from the digestive tract.

Nizonide 500 mg is taken orally, usually twice daily with food, for 3 days or as prescribed. It is well tolerated in both adults and older children.

Common side effects may include nausea, abdominal pain, headache, vomiting, and discoloured urine. The medication is generally safe, but it should be used with caution in patients with liver disease or in pregnancy unless advised by a healthcare provider.
