Primaquine 15 mg is an antimalarial medication used primarily for the radical cure and prevention of relapse in malaria caused by Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium ovale. It works by eliminating dormant liver-stage parasites (hypnozoites) that other antimalarials cannot target, making it essential for complete eradication of the infection. Primaquine may also be used for P. falciparum malaria in combination with other drugs to prevent transmission. The standard adult dose is taken once daily for 14 days, but exact regimens may vary depending on the clinical setting and physician’s guidance. This medication should always be taken after food to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort. Before starting therapy, patients are usually tested for G6PD deficiency, as Primaquine may cause hemolytic anemia in those with this condition. Common side effects include nausea, abdominal pain, and mild anemia. Primaquine 15 mg plays a crucial role in malaria control programs, particularly in endemic regions with high relapse rates.
