Tirzepatide Injection is a once-weekly injectable medication used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is also being prescribed in some cases for weight management in people with obesity or overweight, alongside diet and exercise.
Tirzepatide is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist. It works by stimulating the release of insulin when blood sugar levels are high, reducing glucose production in the liver, and slowing down digestion to help control appetite and promote weight loss.
It is administered subcutaneously in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm, rotating injection sites each week. The starting dose is typically 2.5 mg once weekly, which may be gradually increased under medical supervision.
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, decreased appetite, and constipation. Rare but serious risks include pancreatitis and severe gastrointestinal problems. It should not be used in patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
Blood sugar monitoring and adherence to dietary guidance are essential during treatment.
